Goals are set to be achieved!
By: Paulette Tabbi
While filling out our applications to Michigan State University’s Master of Arts in Education program we were asked to submit a goal statement. This requirement seemed difficult at first because I did not have a current full time teaching position. I felt that the goals I should have set at the time must pertain to my current teaching. I then realized I didn’t need a classroom I was still a teacher! My goal statement encompassed my love of teaching and learning. I have always valued education and the success it can provide for all learners. Goals are necessary and ever changing through out life and our ever-changing career experiences.
In May of 2010, I applied to MSU’s Master of Arts in Education program and when reviewing my goals I can see how much I still value MSU and how much the MAED has been in aid in the achievement of my goals. When reviewing my goals I notice that I still believe in being a highly qualified teacher. My mention of staying current and learning news skills is an ongoing goal, in our changing environments and especially in the field of education. The MAED program has kept me current by making me aware of different tools and technological resources. It has helped me to be comfortable and confident when using new and different forms of technology. I have been encouraged me to teach and explore different programs with my students. In my district we are blessed to have very current and useful means of technology. Each classroom is fully equipped with SMARTboards, which allows me to create interactive lessons, and it keeps me current with using technology in my teaching.
As a dedicated person I set the goal is to become a highly qualified teacher. My university courses and my teaching practices, have confirmed my belief that teaching is one of the most challenging, demanding, but varied and exciting careers there is. The MAED program has guided me through many of these demands. I had to be committed to working cooperatively and independently in order to be successful in the on-line maters program and in my career. Thankfully this was not be a problem due to the fact that I sill feel so passionate about my career.
I still find my goals important and valid, however I am adding new goals as I become more in depth with my career. Now, I would like to step out of the classroom and become a member of a literacy curriculum council. I realize now that being part of a curriculum board requires a lot of knowledge of curriculum. I feel that my masters program and my teaching experiences have prepared me with such knowledge.
The MAED program has supported me personally, academically, and professionally and the recipients have been my students.
