TE 803
Instructor: Judy Thompson
Course Description:
For this course I created, planned, and taught a two week social studies lesson during my student teaching experience. During the semester I learned how to create lessons based on the state grade level content expectations for all of my 32 first grade students.
The planning process included creating "I can" statements from the state standards, brainstorming hands-on lessons, integrating mathematics and language arts, and understanding the academic and social needs of my students. The implementation of the lessons required effective classroom management techniques, accurate time management, and integration of language arts and mathematics.
I learned that my work does not stop when the lesson is over, but teaching requires reflection on the lessons, strategies, and techniques to determine what to change for the future and what to use again. Also, I learned the importance of pre-assessing and post assessing my students to determine the effectiveness of the lessons and its influence on future planning.
This course focused on "school-agency alliances for fostering student learning and strategies for working with families and community groups to improve responsiveness of the school curriculum to student needs." (Michigan State University) I took this course was taken during my internship year.
